Sponsor-A-Child

Southern Cross Humanitarian is committed to providing homes of opportunity for street children.
You can help make this happen by sponsoring a child in one of three ways:

Children in Self Sustaining Homes:
Children in our self-sustaining homes were found in the street or brought to us by a neighborly person and/or a police officer. In each case, the children's parents are dead, imprisoned, or have otherwise abandoned them. Their stories are often heartbreaking and their hearts tender. Street, abandoned and/or homeless children are often abused and/or have little formal education. Their situation leads to low self-esteem, skepticism, mistrust, insecurity, independence, aggressiveness, attachment and/or other emotional disorders. A Southern Cross Home provides a family environment with education and moral orientation fostering personal identity, self esteem, habits of cleanliness, order, discipline and work. Our aim is to have our children adapt successfully into society by having the tools and experiences to communicate and decide their own development. Upon sponsorship, we will provide more details about your child and invite you to come to Peru to get to know them. To sponsor one of these children, download the application here and either mail it in with a check for 3, 6, or 12 months or set up an automatic payment.

Often a child will arrive at one of our homes while we are still in the process of obtaining legal guardianship. This means we often spend money to feed and take care of children you may never see, or not see for a few months after they've been in our care. Portions of general or sponsorship donations may go towards "emergency rescue efforts" which help pay for the costs of literally getting a chlid off the street, through the court system, and into our orphanage. If there is a child in need, we do everything we can to help. It is who we are and what we are about. After being granted legal guardianship, we place a photo of the new child on our website and ask for sponsorships.

Urban Drop-In Centers:
Drop-in centers are places in urban settings where children can "drop in" for a meal, a bath, clean clothes, help, and a place of belonging. Drop-in centers are "feeders" for our orphanages and a source for us to find children who are truly homeless, orphaned, or abandoned. We have volunteers to help the children improve their English and do their school work. All Drop-in Center kids go to school, as we provide all of their uniforms and jackets.

Southern Cross has 78 children registered at the Resbaloza Center in Peru, and we have been given the green light by local official to establish two more centers. We are just waiting on funds. SXHU is looking to add a drop-in center in Puno and one in Urcos, which is between Cusco and Sicuani. (Urcos is a crossroads for children who are trafficked into the jungle for slave labor or prostitution.) Either center there could help as many as 200 children. We also have the ground work completed to have a drop-in center in Cartagena, Colombia with 276 children on the books. With $8,000-$10,000, SXHU can build a drop-in center and $500 a month is enough to sponsor all the children at one center.

Funded Orphanages:
These are orphanages created by other organizations such as the Izcuchaca Center, a home for girls in Anta. We provide sponsorship each month to help these organizations feed, cloth and house their children.

Why the need for Southern Cross Humantarian?
Peru and other Latin American countries have virtually shut their borders to international adoption due to syndicates adopting children from 3rd world countries for sex trafficking, illegal labor, organ harvesting and other heinous crimes. At the same time, governments have created few social networks for their street children. Non profit organizations, such as SXHU, are providing the solutions for millions of these children.

Sponsoring a child can make all the difference in a child's life, and yours, as you have the unique opportunity to provide continuity, security and hope and a provide a bridge from your world to theirs, where there had been none. For details on Sponsorship Correspondence, see: Communication Guidelines. Child sponsorship funds are used for the operational needs of the Sunflower Orphanage, Drop-In-Centers and other funded orphanages. Specific funding amounts are distributed, as required, to help these homes and centers with their operational needs.
