Summer of Service!
Eagle Scout Project Update

El Girasol/Eagle Scout

Harrison Marsh was able to take his eagle scout project to Peru. The following is an excerpt from an email sent to Southern Cross about his experience:

"Harrison started his Eagle project in January by collecting fleece materials from members of the community in Spring Texas.  People opened their hearts and generously donated.  Scouts and neighbors in the area helped make the blankets and on his visit to the orphanage about 30 full sized fleece blankets were delivered. During his visit Harrison was able to sing songs with the children, help clean some of the buildings and play a short soccer match with the children.

Thank you for your help.  Again it was a great experience."

· Big Success! Thanks goes to our friends from the June Expedition (Steeles, Douvilles) who organized a garage sale last week in Holladay, Ut. Their gathered goods, along with the bake sale, raised a little over $900 for El Bichito!

Ecuador Expedition!
by

Arriving in Otavalo, we worked alongside Charity Anywhere and helped serve 1200 people providing medical and dental services. Many people from surrounding communities came to have teeth pulled, have their teeth treated with fluoride and have surgical removal of various skin disorders.

Our group distributed donated items during dental clinics on teeth care, emphasizing the proper use of multivitamins and the basic hygiene kits we brought. We also had many donations of clothing and other basic items we were able to provide.

Another facet of the initial service was to help build a home for an elderly woman in a nearby community and work in an orphanage in Quito run by the Davis Foundation which takes care of over 130 children. We scraped and painted two buildings that truly need it!

While in Quito, we visited the Equator and tried our hands at balancing raw eggs on a nail.  Interesting the things you can do on the center line at the middle of the world.  Also, we watched the water drain different directions in buckets set on each side of the center line.

When we headed out to the Galapagos we were set for a treat. On the island of Santa Cruz the group spent time enjoying the great climate and atmosphere of the Galapagos Islands.  The first day was spent at Tortuga Bay hiking around to see the volcano and swim at the beach.  The next day was the Tour to the Floreana where the group hiked and viewed caves and turtles.  That afternoon was snorkeling with the sharks in the area where the sharks rest.  The next day, on the Bay Tour the group visited the Sea Lion area and swam within feet of the playful groups of sea lions and swam into the center of large schools of fish.

Our whole expedition fell in love with the beauty of Ecuador - the land and especially the people.

I'm now looking forward to the August expedition at El Bichito. For those who'd like to help build this orphanage,
Please go to donations to help create this permanent home for hundreds of children now and into the future!

Southern Cross Intern Updates

Southern Cross interns are in three locations: Trujillo, Porcon (Cajamarca region) and the Sacred
Porcon
Valley in Peru. We are truly grateful for all the time and effort that they put into serving and helping children in all these regions. Southern Cross interns focus on literacy & skill development and finding areas of talent to enhance each child's future.

Granja Porcon (Cajamarca Region) by Joanna Maltbeak:

"At the school in Porcon, we assist in the English classes everyday and also teach Physics to the older students twice a week. The best way we could help with English is with pronunciation. We play lots of games with the kids to get them excited and more involved in the lessons, which covers everything from family relationships to colors and numbers. In the physics classes, we cover basic laws and do lots of practice with vectors. It is a very rewarding experience."

Aldea Infantil (Trujillo) by Carrie Van Dusen:

I'm convinced tias are angels. They work 5 days on
(working, sleeping, eating, living in the Aldea) and then 2 days off so they literally spend more time with the Aldea children than with their own. What's amazing is they don't do it with resentment; instead they take these children in as if they were their own. How noble to be
a mother to 67 children! Angels, exactly.

Mami Olga in casa 10 (girls ranging from 8-16) is one of those busy, angelic tias. The only time tias get to rest (even a little) is after dinner while children are cleaning up and getting ready for bed, but even then Mami Olga is spending time with the children, helping with homework, or teaching trades. This week while eating in her house
I got to see her teach Peruvian traditional dances to the girls, one from the jungle and one from the plains, to perform at a birthday party. Even in her possible downtime she is working to help these children to grow to well-rounded adults.
