My Life at The Sunflower
By Mayda

(Dictated to & translated by Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

mayda1

Who am I?
My name is Mayda, and I am ten years old. My birthday is in May and for my birthday, I want to eat cake. I like chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. I am a friendly girl. I like to sweep my room and I want my room clean. When it is clean, I feel happy.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Espinar where I lived with my brother and sister, mom, and dad. Something happened and then I went to Urubamba to live with my Uncle Carlos. Then, I went to The Sunflower.

Now
I live at The Sunflower with my new mom, dad, and other children. They take good care of me. I have all the things at the orphanage. I have a room and my room has clothes and a wardrobe and a bed. I have a teacher who teaches me to write, read, and draw. It is good to draw.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home where boys and girls live.  There are parents named Delia, Juan, Papi Leonidas, Mami Eunice. They care for us with affection. We have aunts and uncles. The home is beautiful and in the country. We have bedrooms, wardrobes, and other things.

My Future
I want to be a doctor when I am finished with primary school and high school.  Later, I want to go to the United States. I want to have a mom and dad and I want Aunt Colleen to visit and many of the people I know from expeditions.

Sila, Maria 1, Dayana, Lisbeth, and Yeison (brother to Jhoel) sat outside and practiced their English with me. Lisbeth is very proactive about learning it.  She watches my lips and tries to say the sounds clearly.  She finds me wherever I am and asks, How do you say...?  Then she runs off to practice it with her friends. The highlight of the evening was when Maria 1, Maria 2, Wini, Lisbeth, Ebalin, and Almendra were all playing on the grass. The girls brought out their blankets and they were asking me how to say, "Play with me. Read to me, etc.  Then I taught them to say, "Tickle me."  They did such a fabulous job, so of course I .....

Sunflower Home Updates!

WATER - We've had trucks haul water to the waterline2Sunflower home, had rain-catches constructed, looked for independent water sources, all with the hope of the municipality finally building a new waterline which included the Sunflower. We've had to wait to finish the new dorm and bring in new children until we had an increased water supply. Seems like for almost 2 years we've been anticipating a consistent water source and it's finally happening! Our last expedition worked digging the lines, and water should be flowing within the next two months!

Current Progress with Interns:
Introducing Kristin Robrecht, a new intern at the Sunflower with a Masters in Education, and Colleen Burns with a Masters in Education, certification in teaching ESL with an emphasis on immersion classrooms, and doing her 3rd internship at the Sunflower. Both have been helping the children with their schoolwork, creating dream boards to help the children make goals for their future, enhancing writing skills and putting together educational assessments for each child in preparation for the Educational Expedition next week. This will be a huge bonus for incoming interns so they can immediately see where each child is at and move forward more quickly with skill development. (Of course rocket launching is also a must!)

"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats."

· Sunday School children at the Highlands Presbyterian Church, in Allendale NJ, made donation banks and dedicated them during worship to help continue sponsoring Yosimar and provide  books, going down in February's Educational Expedition, for the Sunflower children.  Our warmest thanks for all the congregation's support and their continued kindness.

· Excited thanks goes to Carlos Tejeda Blua and Don Alejandro of Porcon for the kindness and partnerships they are creating regarding internship opportunities for our children.
