  Luz2
(Luz)

Luz and Carmen's mother dropped her two girls off at the Sunflower home about a month ago saying she was unable to feed them and their father had died. Originally she said within a week she would be back to get them. One week later she signed abandonment papers and has never come back.

Luz is a little girl who takes things seriously and works to be good.
 Carmen2
(Carmen)

Carmen is very quiet.  We haven't learned much more about their background yet, but watching them, it is amazing some talent scout hasn't found them. They both love to perform! Give them a song, and they'll sing it with enthusiasm and improvise a dance to go with it. Both are bright, adapting to their new family well and are sweethearts.

maria
(Maria)

Maria came to us 2 months ago.  She still needs a sponsor, so if you know anyone who is looking to enrich their lives and the future of a child, please forward this email to them. Maria is very playful. She loves to repeat the other childrenīs actions and loves tickles!

Your help sponsoring one of these children would be greatly appreciated - www.sxhu.org.

The Sunflower
By Sonia

(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
Hello, my name is Sonia. I am eleven years old and my birthday is August 9. I want to eat cake for my birthday. I also like cookies and ice cream. I like to play with my brothers and sisters.  I am a friendly girl and I feel happy.

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Calca.  I lived with my sister and when I was a baby, my sister took care of me. She took care of me for many days, and when I was seven years old, I reconnected with my mom. One day, I lived happily with my mom and then my mom drank a lot.  Then, my life was very sad. My sister told me that we'd go to an orphanage. She left me here and now I live happily.

Now
I live at The Sunflower with my mom, dad, and brothers and sisters (Everyone at the home) - I live happily.  Every day I play with my brothers and sisters. I have a bed and a wardrobe. I have a teacher who teaches me a lot and whom I love a lot.  Also, I like to make beautiful things and I like to play a lot and my dad corrects me so I behave.

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home where a family of children live happily with Papi Juan and Mami Delia. We live happily. All the boys and girls live happily in this beautiful home.  We like having beds and clothes.

My Future
I want to be a doctor and go to the United States. I want to have a mother and a father who are good. I want to work in the United States and I want to learn English. I want to live in a happy family.

. For Machu Picchu the cost is about $400.
. For Machu Picchu & Lake Titicaca, the cost is about $300.

General Donations:
· For donations to Southern Cross Humanitarian, you can use your thank you letters or cancelled checks for your tax files.
Goodsearch Logo

Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference!  Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU!  Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search.  It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay SXHU a penny.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower each year.

Greetings,

"Too many children walk with pain and fear, in loneliness and despair. Children need sunlight. They need happiness. They need kindness and refreshment and affection....."  (Gordon B. Hinckley)

Thanks to all of you who provide the sunshine for so many children.... you make a world of difference.
Child  Sponsorship Money Is Hard at Work:
3 ninas
Here's How!

Monthly sponsorship donations are the backbone to feeding all the children at the Sunflower home, providing for the children's educational needs and paying the salaries of the dorm parents and cook.

Portions of sponsorship donations may go towards "emergency rescue efforts" which help pay for the costs of literally getting a child off the street, through the court system, and into our orphanage. Children often arrive at our home while we are still in the process of obtaining legal guardianship. This means we spend money to feed and take care of children you may never see, or not see, for a few months after they've been in our care. If there is a child in need, we do everything we can to help. It is who we are and what we are about. After being granted legal guardianship, we place a photo of the new child on our website and ask for sponsorships.

A Southern Cross Home provides a family environment with education and moral orientation fostering personal identity, self esteem, habits of cleanliness, order, discipline and work. Our aim is to have our children adapt successfully into society by having the tools and experiences to communicate and decide their own development.

In the coming months Drop-in Centers from Colombia will go on-line and sponsorship needs will increase ten fold.  Please consider having teams at work, church or family join together to help the new children coming on-line.

Upon sponsorship, we will provide more details about your child and invite you to come to Peru to get to know them. To sponsor one of these children, download the application here or contact laura@sxhu.org for more information.  Thanks to all those who are making the world a better place for these children.

"Don't cry because it's over, Smile because it happened."

2008 Summer Expeditions are Open & Ready for Adventures of a Lifetime!

The above Dr. Seuss quote sums up our philosophy beautifully. Although it is tempting to shed tears at the end of an expedition, we encourage all expedition members to smile at the many memories they've created.

Walking the land of the Inca's & Macchu Pichu, working & serving with the people of the Andes, swimming in the pristine waters of the Galapagos  and growing to love the children with whom you will work are just part of what's waiting for you.

This summer the author of "The Sunflower", Richard Paul Evans, is returning to the Sunflower Home in Peru.  This book has touched many a heart.... if it did yours, this summer might be the time you make your own personal adventure.

To pick the 2008 Summer Expedition right for you, go to our Expeditions page at www.sxhu.org and/or email Van@sxhu.org for any questions.

Photos from past expeditions are posted on our easysite page: www.Easysite.com/SouthernCrossHumanitarian

Macchu Pichu Field Trip:
Sunflower
students
who
participated in English Bootcamp, kept their rooms clean and displayed overall good behavior were rewarded with a field trip to Macchu Pichu.  Juan & Delia (our Home parents) along with Incan History teacher Maria and our Juan Carlos were the chaperones.

Team Sunflower: Each boy received two pair of socks, cleats, shin guards, ball, jersey, shorts, and bag to carry it all in. soccer1 Mostly they all had big smiles on their faces!  Although one has to have a legal birth certificate to play on a league team (we're working with a lawyer to get this accomplished), they have had some fun pick up games with local teams including the police.  (We beat them!) Special thank to Joseph & Michael Chabries for gathering and hauling all the equipment to Peru as well as UtahRush for spreading the word.

English Bootcamp a Success: If success is having children say they want more, then our "pilot" English camp was a "10"!  A big thanks to the fine teachers who went with the flow as we navigated our way through new waters to figure out what approaches would work best.  This foundation allowed us to formulate next steps for next year's camp!

Heartbeats!
"When people donate their time, they are giving of their valuable heartbeats"

· Have you "herd"?  Children in Yorba Linda, CA, worked together to raise money to buy a cow for the Sunflower orphanage. Change was brought in every week and put in a "Cow Jar". Thanks to Candace Mayans and all the kids!

·
Two of the lucky winners from alexya Minnesota Peruvian fundraiser have big smiles here! Maybe that is because they weren't in the blizzard outside! Their fundraiser, put on by Chapter President Colleen Burns, helped provide the Macchu Pichu field trip, supplies for the English Bootcamp and much more!  Thanks all of you who braved the cold to help our kids!

· Linda Pender, a member of Bookwise, is using her bookstore to make a difference for children. She has committed 25% of her bookstore profits to our organization for our livestock initiative. Take a look at what she has to offer: www.Reading2Succeed.com

· Big thanks to Marc Steele from SLC, UT. for donating endless hours of programming for our SXHU website!

· Dr. Kurt Reintjes, residing in Chicago, IL., coordinated efforts to take care of urgent medical needs for our children as well as organized building a rain catchment system. Thank you for taking your time, and using your resources to help us with these projects.

Please let us know how we can help you help Southern Cross. We would love to give you lots of support. For more info email laura@sxhu.org.
