Expansion for
Southern Cross Humanitarian:

by Van Evans - Founder of SXHU

drop-in center

The 2007-2008 corporate year will be a year of great expansion for Southern Cross!  This November, Laura and I will be in Espinal, Tolima, Colombia to help inagurate our Espinal Drop-in Center. Our Colombian Director Rosario Meneses has arranged for a free 5 year rent on the center and for all of the remodeling. We will have 3 showers and a new kitchen and dining area [See attached photos].  We will then visit Cartagena to formalize our plan for building the Drop-In center there.  After a series of meetings with the Colombian family welfare administration (ICBF), I told the director William Santamaria that we build orphanages that house about a hundred homeless children each and then asked him, "if we were to build some of these homes in Bogota, how many could you use?" William shook his head and replied, "At least a hundred."  You do that math:  that's 10,000 homeless children that he knows of wandering the streets of the capital city. We expect to have plans for a Sunflower-type self-sustaining home in Bogota next year and at least one Drop-In center in Bogota.

This coming year we will also complete registration of our non-profit status in Ecuador and Bolivia as well. Watch for announcements in 2008 of new centers or homes in Otavalo, Ecuador and two more centers in Cusco and Puno, Peru.  With your support, we expect to have 10 operating Drop-in Centers and a refined model for self-sustaining homes this coming year.  After that, franchised homes will start cropping up in four countries!

Greater infrastructure will be in place as well, including a database system for our children and new and improved website and DVD.  We are on the verge of remarkable growth thanks to all of you!

The Sunflower
By Noemi

(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
I am Noemi. I am five years old.  I like to draw houses, watch the moon, talk on the telephone and cook. I love vegetables!

Before The Sunflower
I was born in Cuzco where I lived with two older sisters and my mom and dad.  My sisters are Hijidia and Dina. Hijidia and I left our house and lived on the streets. The police found us and and brought me here.
I came to The Sunflower in December.

Now
I live at The Sunflower. Here, I have clothes, a wardrobe, and a beautiful bed. Every morning, I clean my room with my sister. Afterwards, we eat breakfast. I have class. I learn wonderful things. Also, I work with my Papi Juan. Every day, I eat lunch with Mami Delia and the rest. After lunch, I read with my aunt Colleen.  Sometimes, I play after reading.  At last, I eat dinner and sleep.  I feel good here.  I like this place.

Noemi2

What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is an orphanage with many children. We are well here because we have Mami Delia, Papi Juan, Mami Eunice, and Papi Leonidas.  I like The Sunflower because we are well here.

My Future
After high school, I want to work in a kitchen.  I want to be a chef because I like to help Mami Delia. I also want to do laundry for my family. I also want to be a mom. We are going to live in Cusco.

SXHU Smashing Success!

Maybe it was the miracle of having the Gavanchos and Rosario attend, or maybe it was the passion behind the making and previewing of our new DVD, Chapter Presidents that come from both ends of the country, or simply the beauty in the hearts of those attending. Whatever it was, last Friday night was magical. Perhaps the auctioneers said it best when they pulled me aside and sincerely whispered, "We have never felt a spirit like this before.  People here are the kindest and most generous people we have ever seen at a gathering like this.  Thank you for inviting us to come."

Attendees really got in the spirit of the auction, donating $4,900 to build Dorms and $12,500 for Drop-in centers.  With nearly $60K raised during the evening, SXHU will be able to:

· Create 2 urban Drop-In Centers where children on the street can get a hot meal, clean their clothes, take a shower and receive tutoring.
· Finish the last dorms and set of
bathrooms! dorm2
Children displaced by the August earthquake will be needing homes by December. Our hope is to not only have the dorm wing built, but the rooms welcoming and ready when they arrive. The picture on the right shows the bricks that will be used to build the 3rd dorm. The new wing will be built near the hill where the bricks are.  The blueprints are now approved and we can begin to build! It will be two stories, leaving the field wide open for the children to play.
· Secure additional Dorm Parents - These funds will help us pay for 1 to 2 new sets of dorm parents to watch over the children.
· Build Bathrooms for the Anta Home - We have wanted to do this for some time and now it is possible.  It is scheduled for one of the projects during the upcoming Dec./Jan. expedition.
· Expand the Farm - Alfalfa has been planted, and now we can move in Alpacas and Llamas.

Again, we thank you for attending the banquet and for your generous donations! Every dollar donated is tax deductible and used to help others.  If you missed the banquet and you'd still like to donate, please go to our website at www.sxhu.org

AmyExpedition Alumni Amy House's Story in Her Own Words:

On June 24, 1994 our son Scott was killed as the result of an automobile accident, it was in his memory and many others that we worked to bring a Christmas Box Angel to our hometown in Upstate NY. On August 21st 2003, I meet Richard Paul Evans when he came to Chazy to dedicate the angel. It was then I learned of the mission work his family was doing in South America. Mission work was something that I dreamed of doing my whole life. When I learned the title of Richard's book, The Sunflower, it peaked my interest as the sunflower was Scotts' favorite flower.  After reading the book I knew in my heart what I had to do and for the last two summers I have traveled to The Sunflower, last year with our son Ian and this year Ian returned and my husband made the journey also. He needed to meet those who stole my heart!  The past two years have been an incredible experience for our family, it is a wonderful way for us to keep Scott's memory alive!

The Sunflower Orphanage has done something to my heart that I can not begin to explain.  I was so moved when I returned home from last years expedition that these days I even sport a sunflower tattoo!  If you were in attendance at the August farewell dance at the orphanage you may have even caught a glimpse of it!

Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference!  Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU!  Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search.  It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay SXHU a penny.   It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.

Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru.  Remember to enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.

 Make a HUGE Difference
with No Cost to You!

Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.

By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross.  This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a big difference!

All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org.  We also have a registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.

Currently we have 257 completed registrations, so that would figure to about $2,500 per year.

This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.
