New Child
at
Sunflower Home:
Darwin Huaman Sutta
Date of birth--July 30 1998
9 years old
Darwin is our newest child at our Sunflower home. Darwin's mother died when he was just 6 months old. With other children in the house, his father was unable to care for him and he was sent to live in an orphanage.
At the age of 5, Darwin's father took him out of the orphanage, but with problems at home, Darwin lived mostly on his own in the streets until last year when the state took custody of him. Southern Cross was granted custody of Darwin on the 28th of July, just 2 days before his 9th birthday.
Darwin is very inquisitive, bright, and full of energy. He knows his alphabet better in English than he does in Spanish! Darwin's favorite foods are oranges, apples, chocolate ice cream, cake, cookies, suckers and rice with milk. His favorite sport is soccer.
We're excited to have Darwin in our home. If you'd like to be a team or patron sponsor for Darwin, please let us know.
You can sponsor a child by going to our website at www.sxhu.org.

My Life
by Joel
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)
Who am I?
I am Joel. I am eleven years old. I like to travel in airplanes, in cars, and in motorbikes. My favorite foods are rice with egg, rice with chicken, and I also like to eat eggs with bread, cake, and ice cream. I also like to drink soda and eat cookies, chocolate, candy, and turkey. I like to work, study math and English, and ride bikes. I tell stories, make jokes, laugh, and play soccer. I play hiding games with my friends. I also like to play with tops.
Before The Sunflower
I don't know where I was born or where my family is now, but I was born Joel on December 25 in 1995 to a family, my mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa. I was very happy. Then my mom brought me and my brothers here and we stayed at the Sunflower. We are very happy because we like this home for children.
Now
Now I live at The Sunflower and I'm happy. We have a mother and father who care for us every day. We get to do things, like today we will play soccer at the stadium. I have a bed, clothes, table, and chair for meals. We also have bathrooms. We clean and work in this home. We also play and attend classes. We read after lunch and also learn English.
What is The Sunflower?
The Sunflower is a home for orphaned children. It helps the orphaned children and the poor. In this home, there is a mother and father to care for us. We also have our beds, our clothes, and our bathrooms. We also have healthy food. People from the United States bring us good shoes, clothes, and make us study. The Sunflower is important because it helps the orphans and I like living in this home for children. It is wonderful for everyone. I would like The Sunflower to have water and light. I like living here for it is very beautiful.
My Future
After high school, I want to work and go visit my friends, brothers, and family. I want to find my family in Puerto Maldonado and go to the zoo to see the animals. I want to be a professional and I want to be a doctor, police officer, or an engineer because I want to be a professional and work and help my family. I want to travel to Puerto Maldonado and Bolivia.

Rejoicing, reunions, & reaching out at the Fall Banquet!
Celebrate the past two year's achievements with family, friends, and fellow expedition members at the fall Southern Cross Humanitarian Banquet on Friday, September 28th at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. (Click invitation for full size photo).

Children at the sunflower have embroidered quilt squares and painted pictures to be a part of the banquet. Our South American director Leo Gavancho, and his wife Eunice, are going to be at the banquet and want to see all of you! This is their first trip out of South America, so let's make them feel the same sense of "welcome" they so graciously have given to so many of us when we've come to their home.
You can reserve your table and/or seats now by going to our website - www.sxhu.org - and downloading then mailing in your registration form. Individual seats are $85, tables of 10 are $800. Corporate tables are welcome! The majority of your ticket is a tax deducible donation going to finish the last set of dorms!
Auction items such as front row seats at a Jazz game, Disneyland tickets, Singing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, airline tickets, and one week accommodations in Hawaii or Mexico are just some of the fantastic auction opportunities the evening will provide. The auction, lively entertainment and a sit down dinner will make available an enjoyable evening for all.

August Expedition: Inaugaration of the Farm!
Inaugaration day saw Leonidas offering a prayer, dedicating the farm to the poor, that it would bring forth produce to feed the hungry.
Besides vegetables and crops, something wonderfully fishy was going on during the August expedition and Brooke Wirtz was right in the middle of it! This courageous expeditioner from Indianapolis, IN, caught the first fish out of our new trout farm. Besides a good source of protein for our own children and important rotation on "chores", local restaurants and hotels in the area will be buying fish from our farm. We are leasing about 12 acres, (a 25 minute walk up river) for $700 per year. Engineers have projected we could have as many as 50,000 fish with our four ponds.
August Expedition projects also included newborn training and painting a school in Huaylle. The head of the village told the group his people were ashamed they had nothing to give, so they searched the countryside for flowers, presented by this little boy from the village, as their gift thank you.

Dams, wide enough to double as animal crossings, were built at our farm and the first Sunflower Donkey races were held. Proud winners stand with their human riders.

"When people donate
their time, they are
giving of their valuable heartbeats"
· Happy Birthday to Juan Carlos! 29 going on 13! His employment with Southern Cross is a gift to us all. That smile on his face is consistent and exemplifies the love and kindness he bestows up the children at the Sunflower home. No one can "light up the place" like Juan Carlos!
· Michael Benjamin, of Caldwell, ID, is a man who believes in giving back. Check out this great news coverage of how, and why, he is going on a Humanitarian Expedition to Peru to work for the Sunflower children: http://www.2news.tv/features/helpmepaul/8120247.html
· A cement mixer was recently purchased by an anonymous donor for Southern Cross. This not only saves us money during construction, it is a fantastic source of income for our home. Thank you!
· Southern Cross treasurer, Ken Mano, can often be found at the Pleasanton, CA, summer street fare. His church has a booth used to promote family values, home evenings, service, etc. He sets up SXHU posters, brochures, newsletter sign-up sheets and Albertson's registration forms. THANKS Ken!
· This is the 3rd year in a row Sherry Swinnerton's level III Spanish students, at Overlea High School in Baltimore, Maryland, have decided to raise money for the orphanage in Peru. Thank you teacher & students!

WE'RE OVER $220 AND CLIMBING!
Putting in your 2 cents can make a big difference! Bookmarking and using GoodSearch, an internet search engine powered by Yahoo, is a great no cost way to help SXHU! Just enter Southern Cross Humanitarian for your donation in the messages field and you're ready to search. It costs you nothing, but each time you search they pay SXHU a penny. It may not seem like much, but 200 searches a day will help us earn enough to support a child at the Sunflower.
Email everyone in your address book and ask them to use goodsearch to benefit the orphans in Peru. Remember to enter "Southern Cross Humanitarian" as your charity of choice.
