New Children
at Sunflower Home
Almendra

Sometimes Southern Cross Humanitarian faces difficult choices regarding spending money.

Almendra, has been with us our 30 probationary days and we now have official legal custody!  Almendra is the product of an abusive situation. She does not know her father, and her mother does not have the mental capacity to recognize or care for her daughter. Both were being cared for by a kindly woman living along the Inca Trail, who came to us asking for help.

Southern Cross Humanitarian is committed to rescuing children.  Often a child will arrive at our Sunflower Home while we are still in the process of obtaining legal guardianship.  After being granted legal guardianship, we place a photo of the new child on our website and ask for sponsorships.  This means we often spend money to feed and take care of children you may never see, or not see for a few months after they've been in our care.

We would like to thank all of you for understanding that a portion of general or sponsorship donations may go towards our "emergency rescue efforts".  These efforts help pay for the costs of literally getting a chlid off the streets, through the court system and into our orphanage.  If there is a child in need, we do everything we can to help.  It is who we are and what we are about.

For more information about each child please go to
www.sxhu.org and look under Sponsor-A-Child.

El Girasol (The Sunflower)
by Noemi
(Dictated to & translated by 2007 Summer School Teacher Colleen Burns)

Who am I?
I am Noemi.  I am five years old.  I like to draw houses, watch the moon, and talk on the telephone.   I like to cook.  I love vegetables!

Before El Girasol
I was born in Cusco.  I lived with my two older sisters and my mom and dad.  My sisters are Hijidia and Dina.  I also had a brother named Carlos.  I came to El Girasol in December.  I left my house with Hijidia.  The police found me and brought me here.

Now
Now, I live at El Girasol.  Here, I have clothes, a wardrobe, and a beautiful bed.  Every morning, I clean my room with my sister.  Afterwards, we eat breakfast.  I have class.  I learn wonderful things.  Also, I work with my Papi Juan.  Every day, I eat lunch with Mami Delia and the rest.  After lunch, I read.  Sometimes I play after reading.  At last, I eat dinner and sleep.  I feel good here.  I like this place.

What is El Girasol?
El Girasol is an orphanage with many children.  We are well here because we have Mami Delia, Papi Juan, Mami Eunice, and Papi Leonidas.  I like El Girasol becaue we are good here.

My future
After high school, I want to work in a kitchen.  I want to be a chef because I like to help Mami Delia.  I also want to do laundry for my family.  I also want to be a mom and live in Cusco.

Two Ways to Make a HUGE Difference
with No Cost to You!

Albertsons Logo

Register your Albertsons Preferred Customer card with Southern Cross Humanitarian as your charity.
By doing so, Albertsons will donate 1-3% of all your purchases to Southern Cross.  This is a fundraiser where small amounts by many people can truly make a a big difference!

All you need to do is email your name, address, phone# & Preferred Card#, to Ken@sxhu.org.  We also have a registration form on our website on our "How Can I Help" page. Registering Albertson's cards of friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers is an easy, no cost way to support Southern Cross and spread the word.

We have set an initial goal of 500 supporters, please help us get there.  This is also a great service opportunity for high school & church youth groups as well as a qualifying Eagle Scout project: register people in front of a local Albertsons store - for more information contact Ken@sxhu.org.

Albertson stores in CA have been sold to Savemart.  We'll be registering for that program soon.

GoodSearch is free for you to use and gives Southern Cross Humanitarian a penny a search.
It truly adds up.  If each person reading this newsletter did two searches a day those searches would sponsor a child.  Just add it to your toolbar, and when you start the day, make your first searches count!

Leo & Van
High Honors for Leo & Van:

Congratulations goes to Leo Guavancho, our Latin American field director, and Van Evans, the  Founder of Southern Cross Humanitarian, for their recent academic achievements.

Our own Leo Guavancho scored at the top of Peru's first mandated teacher testing. We are fortunate and blessed he is still with Southern Cross as his scores were so high he was asked to lead up the country's new educational reform team.  Everyone who knows Leo, loves him, and there is no one better to work with our children in Peru than him. Thank you Leo!

Van recently graduated with a Master of Social Work degree with an International Social Work certificate. At an awards banquet last month, Van received the MSW Faculty Award for "Outstanding Scholarship and Promise," the highest award given to MSW students in the college.  The day prior to graduation he accepted an offer as an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at Salt Lake Community College to teach Latin American studies. He will teach one class each semester beginning in the fall.

Expeditions: Extraordinary Memories!

See those smiles?  Each holds life long expedition memories. Spencer brought his Eagle Scout project to Peru outfitting a school in a 2005, and the following year raised money to outfit the orphanage kitchen. (The question still remains whether or not the locals carried him on their shoulders!)  Nickki gave medical attention, and hugs to numerous village children two years in a row! Christina painted sunflowers to brighten the second dorms and let Yeri sit in her lap for countless hours. Preston came on two summer expeditions, and each child could not help but love the boy who would swing them round and round until dizzy spells overtook them all.

Join us and create your own lifelong memories... not only for you, but for those on your expedition and those you serve.

Every person has unique talents and skills that come into play during expeditions.  To accomplish our goal of finishing the Sunflower home this summer, yours could make all the difference.
