Ecuador
Come with us to Ecuador this year! Whether this is your first humanitarian expedition, or you are a "repeat" looking for new scenery, we have an exciting trip planned! Above all, we will turn our hearts to the humble Andean people outside of Otovalo. The project will be for homeless or neglected children. Project details and itinerary will be finalized by summer 2008. This trip is 1-3 days longer than other countries' expeditions.
Beyond the rewarding humanitarian experience, there are some delightful treats in store. We'll visit the Mitad del Mundo or "Middle of the World" where the latitude is 0'0'0", and you can stand a nail or an egg right up. After all, Ecuador means equator. Then there's the famous Otovalo Indian Market where the Indians of the region are famous for their weavings and offer their many wares around the Plaza del Poncho, the heart of the trade. We will visit a volcanic crater before flying off to Baltra, in the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Archipelago of some 50 islands is situated 800 kilometers west of the Ecuadorian coast and lie directly on the equator. Known for the Giant Tortoise, Boobies, sea-going iguanas, the only warm climate penguins, and the endangered Flightless Cormorant, these "Inchanted" Galapagos are rich and diverse in rare wildlife. Charles Darwin visited the islands in 1835 and made them famous in Origin of Species. We will visit the islands and charter a yacht for a 3-4 day visit. There will be time to snorkel and enjoy white sandy beaches like Chloe (at right holding a crab) during our July 2006 expedition.
