Colombia
Come with us to Colombia this year! Whether this is your first humanitarian expedition, or you are a "repeat" looking for new scenery, we have an exciting trip planned! Above all, we will turn our hearts to the humble caribbean people of Cartagena.
Twenty years of guerrilla wars are coming to an end, and UNICEF estimates 1 million children in Colombia have been internally displaced in addition to those refugees who fled to Ecuador. Cartagena is a safe tourist town that many have fled to seeking employment or safety. The project will be for homeless or displaced children. We have hundreds of hungry children in Cartagena and Turbaco. Project details and itinerary will be finalized by spring 2008.
Beyond the rewarding humanitarian experience among hundreds of displaced children, there are some delightful treats in store. Cartagena, also called "Cartagena of the West Indies" is an old Spanish colonial city built in 1533. The fame of this prosperous city turned it into the plunder site for pirates and thieves; the legions for the country's defence soon became insufficient, which is why the kings of Spain decided to approve the construction of castles, forts, and walls that surrounded the city. The walled city is enchanting today and we stay in a hotel within its walls. Below is a photo of the hotel just outside our rooms.
In addition to this romantic city, we will spend one day visiting the Islas del Rosario, Islands used by pirates of the Caribbean.
Bring your sweetheart and come enjoy the charming town of the movie Romancing the Stone, with the famous line, "Meet me in Cartagena!"
